In the age of social media, there is this almost pernicious pressure for artists to always “be visible”. There are at least two problems with this. Firstly, there is a lot of congestion on social media. And secondly, constantly striving to be visible on social media can take an immense toll on an artist’s mental health; almost at the expense of doing the thing that matters most and that is making great art.
Now I am not against using social media. It can be very useful and it can also be an important way to make connections with other artists as well as with galleries and collectors in the art world. Artists do get discovered on social media.
However, having said all that, it is equally valuable to not always be on it all the time and to even check out for a while.
